Akashi

Founded in 1888, Eigashima Shuzo (located in the fishing village of Akashi in Hyogo) holds Japan’s first whisky license, issued in 1919, and remains one of Japan’s oldest and smallest whisky producer. With its roots in sake making during the Edo period, official whisky production at the Distillery (also known as White Oak distillery) started only in the early 1960s when small copper pot stills were installed and serious malt production at this distillery did not begin until 1984, when the current copper pot stills were put into action.
