Royal Lochnagar
One of the smallest distilleries in Diageo's portfolio of 25+ distilleries, the wort at Royal Lochnagar is almost clear (not an easy achievement by any means), distillation is slow, the worm tubs are usually run warm - all of which result in a lighter style of new make which is fruity and grassy at the same time. Historically, the distillery has tended to mature its whisky largely in ex-Sherry casks.
Established in 1845 by John Begg, the distillery had some famous neighbours in Queen Victoria and Prince Albert who had recently purchased the Balmoral estate (with its Castle) and which also resulted in the distillery being awarded a Royal Warrant soon after.
