Nikka Whisky's two unique distilleries: Yoichi and Miyagikyo

Yoichi Distillery was establised in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru, he was the first Japanese who mastered whisky making in Scotland, valued the climate and natural features of the north. Yoichi, the place chosen by Masataka was close to the sea, surrounded by mountains on three sides and in many ways similar to Highland in Scotland. Masataka set a pot still using direct coal-fire when he built the Yoichi Distillery. This traditional coal-fired distillation is hardly seen today as it is difficult to control temperature and requires highly skilled craftsmen. The characteristics of Yoichi Single Malt such boldness and toasty burnt flavors are unique features of this distillation.

Miyagikyo Distillery was establised in 1969, Masataka came across a beautiful foggy glen surrounded by Norther mountains and at a junction of two clean rivers. Once he tried the water from one of the rivers, which is now the water source, he was so impressed and immediately decided to build a distillery there.  Along with the different terroir, the different distillation method of Miyagikyo creates distinctive malt whiskies.  He used a different technique to Yoichi, and this different distillation method results in soft and floral characteristics in Miyagikyo Single Malt.

The Taketsuru range of bottlings usually use malts produced at Nikka's Yoichi and Miyagikyo distilleries. However, this 35 Year Old released in 2001 is likely to be predominantly include whisky from the Yoichi Distillery. It is one of the oldest & rare bottlings available (700 bottles were released in 2001) with whiskies which were distilled in 1965 or earlier. Originally such releases were focused on the Japan market only.

Released in 1998, this exclusive bottling from Nikka includes whiskies distilled in and before 1964 and matured in oak barrels for at least 34 years. "A real vintage whisky for the connoisseurs. Gently sophisticated, aromatic and fruity character, this whisky is smooth yet full bodied on the palate with an airy sweetness and a dry finish." Only 1000 bottles were released in 1998.

The new single malt from the Miyagikyo Distillery of Nikka is a vatting of various aged whiskies matured in primarily ex-Sherry casks. Color: Gold Nose: Full flavoured and rich floral notes, beeswax and tropical fruits Palate: Malty cereal balanced with spices such as cinnamon, some ginger and chocolate at the back. Finish: Some tobacco with cooked fruits with a lingering softness.

One of the Key Malt bottlings from Yoichi, this is the older and 12 Year aged version which is now discontinued.  The Key Malts represent the various styles of Whisky (in this case Sherry & Sweet) which are produced at Nikka Distilleries and are included in the vatting of the various other Single Malts and Blends released by Nikka. Now a rare find.
